Novena to saint Corcodome (english version)

 Novena to ask God for strength in trials and combat through the intercession of Saint Corcodome of Auxerre



    The novena (from the Latin "novem") is a prayer to be said for nine consecutive days with a particular intention, depending on the saint prayed in this novena. It is a very popular Catholic tradition, encouraged by the church since the Middle Ages. The nine days correspond to the nine days between Ascension and Pentecost, a time which the Apostles and the Mother of God have spent in prayer waiting for the Holy Spirit. It is not obligatory to wait nine days before the feast of the saint to pray the novena, even if this can be done, but one can pray it at any time, when one feels the need. So, before praying, I advise you to take a moment of silence to go down into your heart before beginning the prayer. 

    I composed this novena from the litany of Saint Corcodome that I wanted to compose. The saint having protected Saint Mamertin from a great serpent, the analogy was made! I have composed this novena to ask God, through the blessed intercession of saint Corcodome of Auxerre, for strength in trials and in spiritual fight.

Lord, our God, who made the earth and the sky, all the wonders of the visible and invisible world, You wanted to crown your holy deacon Corcodome with martyrdom in order to guide us. May his blessed intercession with you, our Savior, protect us from evil. May his prayer protect us from the attacks of the enemy and that with him we can sing your Glory and wait for the return of your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

    Saint Corcodome d’Auxerre J’ai rencontré ce saint un peu par “hasard”. En visitant Auxerre, dans la sacristie de la cathédrale, j’ai eu la chance de pouvoir vénérer le reliquaire de saint Corcodome. Mais le curé comme moi ne savions pas qui il était. Son nom revenait très souvent dans ma tête et mon cœur pendant la prière sans trop savoir pourquoi pendant plusieurs semaines. Mais la curiosité fut trop forte alors j’ai fait de longues recherches sur lui. Ce n’est pas un saint dont on sait beaucoup de choses, je n’ai pu avoir des informations sur sa vie majoritairement dans les vies d’autres saints : saint Mamertin, saint Pèlerin, saint Germain d’Auxerre et saint Marcellin. J’ai aussi pu trouver certaines informations dans l’Acta Sanctorum et dans le travail de l’abbé Paul Guérin (les Petits Bollandistes). Il est merveilleux de découvrir un saint, surtout un martyr. La représentation du martyr de saint Corcodome d’Auxerre

  La représentation du martyr de saint Corcodome d’Auxerre Il est déjà difficile de représenter un saint dont on ne sait rien et dont quasiment aucune image n’existe, hormis deux enluminures où on peut deviner qu’il est présent avec saint Pèlerin et saint Marse, mais là encore, il n’y a aucune certitude. Mais il est encore plus dur de savoir comment représenter son martyr quand on ne sait pas comment il est mort ! Sous les conseils d’une iconographe, j’ai lu d’autres histoires de martyrs de la région et de l’époque, comment les persécuteurs de la foi avaient l’habitude de tuer les saints martyrs. Saint Corcodome est mort sous Dioclétien, en l’an 300, et autour de cette date, il y a d’autres martyrs célèbre : saint Savinien, sainte Colombe de Sens, saint Potentien ou saint Pèlerin d’Auxerre, dont Corcodome était le disciple. Les différents saints autour de saint Corcodome d'Auxerre

     Je partagerai ici le fruit de mes recherches sur saint Corcodome, en particulier ceux qui entourent les saints qui l’ont connu. Certaines choses n’ont pas retenu mon attention, car trop tard et "légendaire", mais il est toujours bon de s’y intéresser pour la culture. Saint Pèlerin d'Auxerre : au calendrier des Petits Bollandistes au 16 mai Dès les premiers siècles de l’Eglise, l’Evangile avait été annoncé dans l’Auxerrois et dans le Donziais, qui formait la majeure partie de l’ancien diocèse d’Auxerre. Leboeuf prétend que saint Savinien, apôtre du Sénonais, avait étendu son zèle apostolique jusque dans le Nivernais, en y députant des missionnaires ; les deux diacres Séronitus et OEoaldus seraient venus y prêcher, et saint Austremoine se serait arrêté à Nevers avant d’aller se fixer à Clermont. Malgré les persécutions, la foi se propageait donc en secret, et bientôt les chrétiens de l’Auxerrois firent parvenir jusqu’à Rome leurs vœux ardents pour avoir au milieu d’e...
